Rex is a company director who has been involved in the horticulture industry in NZ, Australia and China for over 30 years. He was born in Hastings and went to Mahora Primary School, Heretaunga Intermediate and Hastings Boys High School. Rex is married with six children, two of whom are at primary school in Havelock North. He is a Director of several private companies involved in horticulture and intellectual property, a Trustee of the Regional Sports Park, Chairman of the U-Turn Charitable Trust and a Trustee of Te Aranga Marae.
"The Regional council is about to commit the region to its biggest ever investment in unseemly haste and we need to slow it down. I am yet to find a person who clearly understands this whole project. An investment of this size needs to be thoroughly understood, debated and determined by the people. It is their money and their future at risk.
"It is time for a change in the Regional Council; the old guard have become complacent and distanced from their constituents, as was highlighted during the drought when they treated many of the growers in Heretaunga with scant regard.
"It was an unacceptable performance from an elected body that has clearly lost its way and has a poor understanding of the importance of our primary industries and their impact on jobs and the economic viability of our region."
Rex is also strongly for amalgamation of all the HB councils in to one unified HB council.
"We need to start working together and presenting ourselves with one voice on the national stage."
Rex is also a strong advocate for our environment and a GM free Hawkes Bay.
"We need jobs and industry that work in harmony with the environment, not against it. There is no victory in having more money, more cars, more TVs and more plastic if we can't swim in our rivers, eat our fish, drink our water or see the stars."
